The look-out tower on Mt. Tarrangower was erected in 1924, to help encourage tourism. By that time the town's main industry, gold mining, was in decline. Most of the mines were closed. The last one (Oswald's North British) closed in 1926.
The structure is a "poppet head" from a closed mine. The components were hauled to the summit of the mount using horses. On the first level there is a bronze directional plaque, donated by Miss McArthur in 1924.
When you visit Maldon, don't miss the opportunity to climb the tower and obtain an excellent view of the surrounding countryside.
The late Mr. Keith Maldon Laity told maldonstyle that the tower is in the geographical center of the State of Victoria. He related how, in the old days, this had been determined: A map of the State was pasted onto a piece of ply-wood. This was then carefully cut out, following the outline of the State. Once this was done, it was placed on a pin-point and moved around to find the place where it balanced - which turned out to be exactly where Maldon is located.
